Dr. Gia Pratama Putra serves as Head of the Emergency Department and Public Relations Manager at Prikasih Hospital. He has also practiced at Fatmawati Central General Hospital in South Jakarta. A graduate of YARSI University, he views being a doctor as a way of serving humanity (Hello Sehat, 2026).
He is also a writer, public speaker, and health promoter who explains complicated medical terms in everyday language.
Dr. Gia has written two novels. His first, Berhenti di Kamu, was adapted into a film directed by Indra Gunawan and released in 2021. His second, Perikardia, chronicles his experiences as a medical intern, or co-ass. His medical background and emergency-care experiences have given him stories to share.
Stories from the Emergency Room
Dr. Gia gained experience at hospitals in Garut and Serang. During his time at RSUD Garut, he once helped with 25 deliveries within 24 hours. He also discusses health topics through his Instagram account, @giapratamamd.
He attracted attention following his appearance on Raditya Dika’s podcast. He shared an experience involving a patient who suffered a severe complication after giving birth (Kumparan, 2025).
According to Dr. Gia’s account, the case occurred at RSUD Garut in 2010. A man arrived carrying a black plastic bag and asked him to examine its contents. Dr. Gia realized that it contained tissue from the patient’s uterus and immediately told the man to bring the patient to the hospital.
He explained that the mother had given birth outside the hospital. According to the story, the complication occurred when the person assisting with the delivery attempted to remove what was believed to be the placenta. Instead, part of the woman’s uterus was pulled out. The case demonstrates how dangerous childbirth complications can become without appropriate medical procedures (Raditya Dika, 2025).
Explaining Health in Everyday Language
Dr. Gia also discusses the challenge of quitting smoking through logical and relatable explanations. According to the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey, 57.9% of Indonesian men aged 15 and older used tobacco (WHO Indonesia, 2025).
People often smoke to cope with stress or feel calmer. Dr. Gia explains that the slow, regular breathing involved in smoking may contribute to this sensation. However, smoking also involves nicotine dependence and remains harmful. Its consequences might not appear immediately, but they can emerge in the future (Tretan Universe, 2026).
Even with advice from loved ones, it is difficult to force someone to stop smoking. The intention must also come from within. While quitting is hard, smokers can continue trying and seek professional support when necessary.
Dr. Gia also reminds people to drink enough water. He uses an analogy: imagine washing a mountain of dirty dishes. You need enough clean, flowing water to rinse them. In the same way, adequate fluid intake supports the kidneys in performing their functions. Although everyone’s fluid needs may differ, this analogy makes the process easier to understand.
People can also build healthier habits by focusing on three pillars: first, eating nutritious food; second, exercising consistently; and third, getting enough sleep. Focusing on these pillars makes a healthy lifestyle simpler.
Why Does Dr. Gia Inspire Me?
Ever since I discovered Dr. Gia, I have felt a renewed spirit to chase my dream of becoming a doctor. I am amazed by how he translates complex medical concepts into terms relevant to daily life. I want to follow in his footsteps and explain medicine simply so that people can better understand their health.
There is an incredible sense of pride in educating someone, even if you are not a formal teacher or lecturer. Without realizing it, you may be helping improve the literacy of those around you.
Hearing Dr. Gia’s unique, funny, and sometimes extreme medical stories makes me more curious about medicine. Achieving this dream is undeniably difficult, but the thought of reaching it brings me joy and fulfillment.
Doctors and teachers play vital roles in society. We would not be as knowledgeable without teachers or as healthy without doctors. A doctor’s purpose is not only to cure disease, but also to help prevent illness before it occurs or spreads.
Public health does not stand alone. Hospitals, medical infrastructure, and health programs require sustainable funding. Taxes help provide resources for these essential services. Doctors protect people’s health directly, while taxes support the system in which they work. Both share the same purpose: improving people’s quality of life.
Young people should not pursue medicine if their only goal is a high salary. Personally, I want to become a doctor because I genuinely love helping people in need. Nothing compares to seeing patients smile again after recovering from an illness.
